Opportunities for Students of Montserrat at the University of Puerto Rico

27th May, 2009

Special arrangements are now in place for undergraduate and graduate students of Montserrat and other member states of the Organization of the Eastern Caribbean (OECS) to pursue courses at any of the eleven campuses of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). This was made possible because of a collaborative agreement between the UPS and the OECS.

The agreement provides for nationals of the OECS member states who enroll at UPR to be accorded the same status as Puerto Rican students with all attendant advantages and benefits. One such benefit is a halving of the tuition cost for OECS nationals enrolled under this program compared to a non-national of Puerto Rico who enrolls at the University of Puerto Rico. The agreement also provides the assurance the tuition will remain the same for a student during the normal duration of their stay at the University.

Ten places would be made available to OECS students for the first intake of students commencing August 2009.

The OECS Secretariat intends to significantly increase the public awareness of the programme in the coming months, starting with a presentation to OECS Ministers of Education at the annual meeting in June in Anguilla, in the hope of that most students will avail themselves of the opportunities that it provides.

Education Minister, Roselyn Cassell Sealy said that students of Montserrat should take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the University of Puerto Rico.
