Physical Planning Unit presents Electricity at Work Regulations and 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations.

29th May, 2009

Sixty four (64) persons participated in the recent training in Electricity at Work Regulations and 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations over the two week period 11th to 14th and 18th to 21st May. The training was facilitated by Fred Lemont of Technical Training Solutions out of the UK and was held at the DMCA. One session was conducted 9 am to 3 pm and the other 3 pm to 8 pm.

Target groups from the Electrical Industry included Electrical Engineers, Designers, Electrical Contractors, Wiremen, Maintenance Personnel, Workers from the Electricity Division (MONLEC) of Montserrat Utilities Limited and Suppliers of electrical apparatus.

The course was organized by the Electrical Inspectorate Division of the Physical Planning Unit which is the secretariat for the Electrical Licensing Authority that review and grant Electrical wiring licenses. The most recent edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations is part pre-requisite for new license and renewal of license.

The IEE 17TH Edition Wiring Regulations came into effect in UK in July 2008. It is the most recent Edition wiring regulations used in UK, Europe and Montserrat. The main purpose of the Regulations is to prevent or minimize injury to persons and animals. It also prevents danger to equipment. Some obvious changes are the new colour codes for wires.

The Electrical Installation Act is the Act that regulates the Electrical Installation Industry on Montserrat and endorses the IEE Regulations as the main regulations for Electrical Installations.

Participants in the training course had high praise for the training course. It was felt that the training which brought together suppliers, practitioners as well as the providers of electricity and the licensing authority was timely and that the information was ‘state of the art’.

The information about the change in the colours of wires used will ensure that the correct wires are imported by the suppliers. It also allows wiremen and contractors to use the correct combinations when tying together the wiring on the addition made to old structures.

Forty five (45) participants wrote an examination which would contribute to their license. The certification would better prepare them to operate within the region.
