To actively participate in the formulation and implementation of
policies to assist in the realization of Government of
Montserrat’s (GoM) economic and social agenda, particularly as
these policies relate to the labour market.
MISSION STATEMENT
To assist Government of Montserrat through an effective system
of labour administration, in the formulation and implementation
of sound labour and employment policies by promoting training
and development programmes, opportunities for employment
creation, decent work, a healthy and safe working environment
and adherence to international labour standards.
The following corporate goals of the Labour Department provide
the framework within which the Government’s labour policies will
be implemented:

To promote and ensure that the relevant and
appropriate International Labour Conventions/Standards, and
existing Labour Legislation are adhered to within the labour
market.

To enact comprehensive legislation to
regulate Occupational Health and Safety conditions in the
working environment.

To establish and maintain a Labour Market
Information System (LMIS) to collect, collate and publish
timely and relevant information on changes taking place
within the labour market.

To develop and implement employment and
labour force training policies and programmes especially for
unemployed workers, vulnerable groups and youths.

To contribute to enhancing the
competitiveness of the economy, through productivity
policies and measures.

To maintain the existing friendly Industrial
Relations climate necessary for enterprise growth in the
country.

To train and develop the capacity and
capabilities of the staff of the Labour Department so that
the may function effectively to realize these objectives.
