On behalf of the Montserrat Public Service, Her Excellency, Governor (Acting) Mrs. Lyndell Simpson extends heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of D.R.V. Franklyn Edwards OBE OE who passed away on Friday, June 7th, 2019 following a long battle with illness at the age of 81.
Mr Edwards was a nominated member and Deputy Speaker of the Montserrat Legislative Council now referred to as the Montserrat Legislative Assembly for 28 years from 1973-2001. In 1995, he was appointed Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) and in 2016, the Order of Excellence medal for his service to Montserrat in the areas of sports, politics, humanitarianism and commerce.
Mr Edwards was chairman of the Bank of Montserrat Limited and a board member of the Montserrat Electricity Services (MONLEC) now known as Montserrat Utilities Limited (MUL) for over a decade.
During the mid-1950s to mid-1960s, DRV Franklyn Edwards OBE OE captained and played for the Montserrat Cricket Team and was also captain of the Leeward Islands Cricket Team. In the 1970s, he served as president of the Montserrat Cricket Team and the Leeward Islands Cricket Association.
Mr Edwards, was a member of the Montserrat Jaycees which was responsible for organizing the first ever official Montserrat Year-End Festival Activities in 1962 and later went on to serve as its president.
Mrs Simpson said, her thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mr D.R.V. Franklyn Edwards OBE OE at this very difficult time.
She stated that Mr Edwards will always be remembered for his involvement in real estate, sports, culture and politics among other areas on Montserrat.
Mrs Simpson also announced that the Public Service of Montserrat will close at 12 noon on Friday, June 28th, 2019 to allow public officers to pay their final respects to Mr DRV Franklyn Edwards OBE OE.
