The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) is inviting the people of Montserrat at home and in the diaspora, to help choose the name of the island’s New National Hospital; as construction on the landmark facility continues toward completion.
“This hospital belongs to all of us and therefore its name must be informed by the people,” said Minister of Health, Dr. the Hon. Ingrid Buffonge. “It’s being built for the people of Montserrat, so it’s only right that the people of Montserrat help to choose its name.”
For nearly three decades, Montserrat has relied on Glendon Hospital operating out of a converted primary school in St John’s — a temporary solution put in place after the 1995 Soufrière Hills eruption forced the evacuation of the original hospital in Plymouth. The New National Hospital represents a major milestone in the island’s recovery and ongoing development, and the Ministry believes it is essential for the people of Montserrat at home and in the diaspora, to have an input in this significant development milestone.
Individuals wishing to take part are asked to note that the naming process will run in four stages:
- Submit your suggestion — Share your proposed name and tell us why it matters to you.
- Committee review — A naming committee, established to review submissions and determine the final name, will consider all suggestions and select a recommended name.
- Announcement — The confirmed name will be publicly announced.
Submissions opened on Friday, 21 August 2026 and closes on Thursday, 3 September 2026.

- In person: Forms are available at all health centers and at the Ministry of Health and Social Services. Submissions can be dropped off at the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Little Bay, Montserrat.
Suggestions can be inspired by Montserrat’s history, geography, language, or its story of resilience and rebuilding. All ages are encouraged to take part, and residents are especially encouraged to involve children and elders — this is a name that will be used for generations.
The following guidance will be used to assess the submissions:

| Not already in use | Check the proposed name is not already used by another hospital or protected as a trademark, to avoid disputes |
| Clear and easy to use | Should work naturally in everyday speech, on signage, and in official documents |
| Free of controversy | Avoid names likely to be politically divisive or exclusionary to any part of the community |
| Durable | Should hold up over decades, not tied to a passing trend, sponsor, or short-term reference |
Following the submission period, a naming committee will review all suggestions and determine a recommended name, before it is publicly announced.
About the New National Hospital Project:
The New National Hospital is being developed by the Government of Montserrat in partnership with Article 25 and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), on the site of the existing Glendon Hospital. The project, funded through the Capital Investment Programme for Resilient Economic Growth (CIPREG) will deliver a modern, hurricane-resilient healthcare facility, meeting Montserrat’s long-term healthcare needs.
