Primary Health Care
Overview of Department:
Primary Care is the day-to-day healthcare available in every local area and the first place people go when they need health advice or treatment. It’s the first stop for symptoms that are new or for concerns about physical or mental health.
Primary care includes:
- Doctor’s clinics at the district health centres
- Pharmacy (located at the hospital)
- Community and practice nurses
- Community midwives and health visitors
- Family planning or sexual health clinics
- Dentists
- Some specialist service such as ophthalmology and hearing care
Our Primary Health Care system also includes the Dental Clinic, the Environmental Health Department, the Health Promotion Unit, the Nutrition Department and the Mental Health Unit.
Health Promotion Unit
The Health Promotion Unit aims to promote good health and healthy lifestyles through the transfer of information, ideas and concepts, which empower individuals, families and the community to improve their health.
The Health Promotion Unit facilitates the following key activities:
- Health education and outreach programmes
- Sexual health services
- Health promoting activities
The Health Promotions Coordinator is Mrs. Penny Maloney.

Mental Health Unit
The mental Health Unit is responsible for providing the people of Montserrat with transformative and integrated services that will aid in the management of mental illness and maintenance of good mental health. There is no health without mental health.
The team is made up of four (4) professionals who fill the following positions; Consultant Psychiatrist who visits bimonthly, Clinical Psychologist, Psychiatric Nurse and Community Mental Health Officer. These individuals work closely to deliver effective and quality service to the people of Montserrat.
Our office operates from the St. John’s Clinic where majority of our services are being delivered. The Mental Health Team also works in collaboration with other stakeholders within the Government of Montserrat to ensure that the people receive the best care possible.
The Mental Health Unit has a Policy and Plan which focuses on five (5) main priority areas;
1. Enhancing and formalizing the national leadership, institutional and legislative structures for mental health service delivery in Montserrat.
2. Promoting the mental, social and emotional wellbeing of the general population.
3. Preventing mental illness where possible.
4. Developing/enhancing access to a well-coordinated comprehensive mental health service delivery system which responds to the diverse needs of the population.
5. Improving the social and economic participation of people living with serious mental illness.

Dental Clinic
The Dental Clinic provides oral care to specific categories of persons. The service is free and includes the following:
- Dental Cleanings/Prophylaxis
- Restorations /Fillings
- Extractions (simple & surgical)
- Dental Sealants
- Minor Oral Surgery
- Oral Health Education
