Release Date: March 10, 2020

The Government of Montserrat has provided permanent homes to two residents on island, under its Public Assistance Housing Programme.

On Monday March 9, the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Housing and the Environment (MALHE) handed over the keys for two single bedroom houses to Ivan ‘Heads’ Allen in St. Peters and John ‘Boom’ Allen in Dyer Piece.

Minister of Housing, Honourable Crenston Buffonge said the government incentive programme is aimed at improving the living conditions of the most vulnerable and those threatened with homelessness. Speaking during the handover ceremony at one of the homes, Minister Buffonge said, “With the available funds, which are to be utilised over a three-year period, this programme has targeted 5 households to construct, public assistance housing, on private lands.”

The Public Assistance Housing Programme is funded in the amount of three hundred thousand dollars (EC$300,000.00) over the three-year period.

Minister Buffonge also noted that, “The implementation of the project and construction of the houses is being undertaken by the Montserrat Land Development Authority (MLDA), while the Housing Unit will ensure security of tenure by negotiating lifetime leases, where lands are not registered in the name of the beneficiary, and prepare the Housing Agreements for execution.”

Manager of the Land Development Authority (LAD), Mr. Franklyn Greenaway said the organization is pleased to be associated with a project that finds housing solutions for vulnerable persons.
