GOVERNMENT REVIEWS OPTIONS FOR DRAG RACING ON MONTSERRAT

As part of ongoing efforts by the Government of Montserrat to strengthen its relationship with various sporting bodies on island, Government officials met with the Montserrat Motor Sports Association (MMSA) to review options for a proposed drag strip, which would better facilitate drag racing here.

On Monday August 17, Minister of Communications, Works, Energy & Labour, Dr. the Hon. Samuel Joseph and Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Housing and the Environment, Hon. Crenston Buffonge, and representatives from the Land Development Authority and Lands & Survey Department met with members of the Montserrat Motor Sports Association (M.M.S.A.).

Currently, drag racing takes place on a portion of the Cork Hill main road between the Cork Hill round-about and Weekes access road. The Cork Hill main road is a major carriage way used for transporting sand and aggregate, and also facilitates bus tours to Plymouth, and other southern areas. The traffic in the area has impacted the road conditions. As a result, the M.M.S.A. has resubmitted their proposal to improve the sport locally by seeking to build a strip.

The meeting allowed for in-depth discussions on the proposal between Government officials and the M.M.S.A representatives.
